The thick cherry tops were milled from logs found in the backyard, and the base is from easy to find pine located at the hardware store. Based on the popular X design seen in custom furniture, I made these tables slim for my house because we just purchased a large sectional couch and needed to save on space. I saved my friend $300 by making this coffee table & bookshelf combo myself. Such a fun project, plus how can you pass up using nothing but chainsaws, drawknives, and blow torches?!?! Using the "Maker Mill" (link to free plans below), I was able to make true parallel cuts, and used the blow torch to shou sugi ban the inside bookshelf that I carved out with the chainsaw. For less than $100 dollars, which includes the 18" chainsaw, I was able to make a vertical chainsaw mill that I plan to use to make Christmas and birthday gifts this season. My brothers let me have Ash and Cherry logs for free, so this was the perfect opportunity to try out an idea.
